Feel Calm and Confident Behind the Wheel Again

Driving anxiety can turn something you used to do without thinking into something you dread, avoid, or have to push yourself through.

I help you change the patterns behind that anxious response so you can feel calmer, more confident, and more in control when you drive.

When Driving Becomes Something You Dread

Driving anxiety can make even ordinary trips feel overwhelming. You may find yourself thinking about the drive long before you get in the car — planning the route, worrying about what might happen, or wondering whether the anxiety will show up again.

You might avoid certain roads altogether, stay off the highway, take longer routes, or depend on someone else to drive whenever you can.

And sometimes the hardest part isn’t the road itself. It’s worrying about how you’ll feel once you’re on it — especially when turning around or pulling over may not be easy.

Over time, your world can start getting smaller simply because driving feels like something you have to prepare yourself to get through.

Highways

Higher speeds, merging, or feeling unable to easily get off.

Bridges

Feeling trapped or anxious when there’s nowhere to pull over.

Traffic

Feeling tense or overwhelmed when surrounded by other cars.

Driving Alone

Feeling less secure when there’s no one else in the car.

Why Driving Anxiety Keeps Coming Back

You can know that you’re a capable driver and still feel anxious behind the wheel.

That’s because driving anxiety isn’t always about what’s actually happening on the road. Your mind can learn to associate certain driving situations — highways, bridges, traffic, unfamiliar roads, or even particular physical sensations — with danger or the possibility of losing control.

Once that response becomes automatic, simply reminding yourself that you’ve driven safely before may not be enough to switch it off.

You may even begin feeling anxious before you drive. Thinking about an upcoming trip, imagining a difficult stretch of highway, or wondering whether the anxiety will return can be enough to start the same response.

And every time you avoid a particular road or situation because of the anxiety, it can become harder to feel comfortable facing it the next time.

The goal isn’t simply to push yourself through the drive. It’s to change the patterns that are making driving feel threatening in the first place.

How We Begin Changing the Driving Anxiety Pattern

We start by understanding exactly what happens for you when driving anxiety shows up: what situations tend to trigger it, what you anticipate might happen, what you feel in your body, and what you find yourself doing to avoid or get through those situations.

From there, we work with those patterns at a deeper level. Hypnosis is one of the tools I use to help you become deeply focused and receptive to change, making it easier to create different responses to the roads, situations, thoughts, and feelings that used to trigger anxiety.

You’ll remain aware and in control throughout the process. There’s no losing control, revealing secrets, or doing anything against your will. This isn’t stage hypnosis. It’s focused, collaborative work customized around your specific driving anxiety.

The goal is for driving to begin feeling ordinary again, something you can simply do without having to prepare yourself for the anxiety first.

This Approach May Be Right for You If…

  • You know you’re capable of driving, but certain roads or situations still make you anxious
  • You avoid highways, bridges, heavy traffic, unfamiliar routes, or driving alone because of how you might feel
  • You spend time worrying about a drive before you even get in the car
  • You’ve found ways to get through difficult drives, but you’re tired of having to manage the anxiety every time
  • Your driving anxiety is limiting where you go, what you do, or how independent you feel
  • You want driving to feel normal again instead of something you have to plan around or prepare yourself for

Why Work With Bill Schrier

I’m a Board Certified Hypnotherapist with a master’s degree and more than 20 years of experience helping people create meaningful change.

Driving anxiety can develop for many different reasons. For some people it begins after a frightening experience on the road. For others it seems to appear without an obvious cause. And the situations that trigger it can be completely different from one person to the next.

That’s why I don’t use a one-size-fits-all process. Every session is customized around you, your particular driving anxiety, and the patterns we uncover together.

We’ll work at a pace that feels comfortable, with the goal of helping you feel calmer and more confident behind the wheel, and giving you back the freedom to drive without anxiety determining where you can and can’t go.

I work exclusively online via Zoom, so you can do this work privately and comfortably from your own home.
